Marmaris, Turkey, October 2009
This holiday fortnight was a game of two halves, because Lesley was only able to join us for the first week. Had we had the arrangements finalised earlier, we could have kept the 34-foot yacht for the second week too, though that would have been slightly more expensive than the 32-foot one that we actually decamped to. But at least having only one stern cabin meant that the heads was much bigger on the smaller boat.
The first week was enlivened by several squally thunderstorms. Fortunately none of those occurred while Brian, his son Jamie and I went up the Dalyan river trip to the ancient ruins at Caunus, the rock tombs carved into the cliffs, and the mud baths (per photo below). For me, the highlight of that trip (which I have been on in previous years) was the amazing number of kingfishers to be seen, both outside the delta in a coastal cave and up the river. They are used to the tourist river boats streaming past and can be seen from quite close up. Meanwhile Ian and Lesley took the yacht out on their own for a sail and lunch stop.
For the second week we lost the civilising influence of having Lesley with us. However the weather was more settled, which meant less wind and more need to motor. With the exception of the last day in Marmaris bay, when we had a good sail around at random, as shown by our track and the last of the photos below. Google Earth "KML" file: Full track (1.5Mb) or KMZ-zipped to 153Kb or multi-coloured path only (123Kb). Below are some photos taken during this trip.
