Yachting and
Navigating
I enjoy flotilla sailing in the
Mediterranean but admit to having only a rudimentary knowledge of
navigation.
So this page exists merely to provide a link to yacht charter
companies (see below), to the manufacturer of my Garmin GPS-II+ handheld navigator, and to the
sort of post-hoc charts that can be generated with its help.
On land, I link my GPS to my Psion palmtop for coarse map
tracking using a map program (Mapper-GB).
My mate and I used to go flotilla sailing with Sunsail but have found them to be rather
inflexible so for several years past we have instead been with Setsail.
In 2001, however, we convinced ourselves to "push the boat
out" and try the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean
with The
Moorings. They offer a
one week flotilla, extensible with an additional week of
bareboating. We found that in the last two weeks of June, into
July, there was an increased incidence of rain squalls. The track
of the flotilla week is included in the post-hoc charts mentioned above.
I have found useful advice on yachting matters in Yachting
Monthly magazine.
